Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa (MMP) is located in a hamlet called Asah Gobleg, near Munduk Hill Station, on a ridge close to the three crater lakes of North Bali. Surrounded by rainforest the views are of endless rolling hills reaching down to the Bali sea with Java’s volcanoes as a backdrop.

Munduk Moding Plantation is the only boutique hotel in Bali located on a working coffee plantation that produces its own speciality coffees. Spread out over 5 hectares and nestling in luxuriant gardens full of tropical flowers and plants, the hotel has some of the best views on the Island.

The villas and suites offer unparalleled privacy and marry key features of Balinese architecture with a modernist tradition. There are just nine villas and three suites available rendering a stay here an intimate experience.

Guests can relax at the award-winning infinity pool, the jacuzzi or at the unique spa made from soaring bamboo structures. For those feeling more active, there is a gym, tennis and badminton courts, horse riding and a sky lounge that offers a comprehensive library and games room.

The MiMPi restaurant (Balinese for “dream”) has stunning views and serves food made with fresh ingredients from the properties own vegetable and spice gardens. Try outdoor dining on the terrace under frangipani trees next to the swimming pool or perhaps in a private bale bengong (gazebo).

Munduk Moding Plantation is European-Indonesian partnership that works to preserve the natural environment in unison with the local community, supported by the Munduk Foundation.

Q Energy

Munduk Moding Plantation uses energy efficient devices where possible and monitors the energy efficiency of all electrical appliances as a critical part of their purchase policy. As a result, they have switched to the use of heat pumps for heating the swimming pools which has significantly reduced energy use compared to the system of gas heating that they used to deploy. There is a strict policy of cutting electricity to an unoccupied room and staff monitors energy use very closely. All lights around the plantation are switched off after the “service hour” at 11 pm and energy consumption is recorded monthly. They are working on developing a meaningful target for energy savings. In the longer run, MMP aims at introducing renewable energy sources on the plantation – a feasibility study will be launched in early 2017.

Q Water

MMP collects rainwater which is used in all non-critical systems. The capacity of the rainwater collection system is around 65m3 – allowing about 50% of the water use at the plantation to be fed from this source. We also recycle our grey water through two dedicated waste water gardens which rely on a multiple filtering system and micro-organisms to clean the water. This water is suitable for watering the plantation and vegetable gardens. They use double flush and efficient taps in the kitchen and the utilities to save water and water consumption is recorded every day. This allows them to carefully monitor any changes in consumption levels and take immediate action in case of leaks etc.

Q Waste

Munduk Moding Plantation has its own composting centre where all the organic waste produced on the plantation is composted. This is used to fertilize their coffee plantation and vegetable gardens. They also apply a strict recycling policy and a significant part of their un-organic waste are recycled by “Gobleg Go Green”. MMP only uses bottled water and aims to phase out the use of plastic as much as possible.

Q Community

Munduk Moding Plantation together with its sister company Munduk Coffee has set up a dedicated Foundation (Yayasan) – the Munduk Foundation – to support the local community which is financed from the profits of the hotel. This foundation undertakes a range of activities including a fellowship programme for poor children, support to the local schools, financial assistance to the local communities for community projects (e.g. creation of a playground). MMP also finances dance and English classes for children of the neighbourhood. Finally, MMP’s Green Team works with the local community to help clean up the village and remove plastic. They have an extensive programme of local visits for our guests which generates income for our local community. All employment at MMP is sourced from the local villages and extensive training programmes are deployed – including for their numerous local trainees.

Q Pollution

Munduk Moding Plantation uses biodegradable products wherever possible; notably in the laundry, the housekeeping department and the kitchen. There is no generator on site but a system of emergency lamps and MMP is planning to maximise the use renewable energy source in the future. MMP has asked every team member to avoid the use of radios and keep noise volumes very low to avoid noise pollution. This is strictly monitored.

Q Kitchen

They source their food locally as much as possible – to a very large extent from our their vegetable garden which is organic and from a number of organic farmers in the neighbourhood. In the kitchen itself, they use environmentally friendly cleaning liquids.

Q Guest Education

Munduk Moding Plantation invites its guest to save energy and reduce water consumption by leaving a “sustainability” leaflet in the room with practical guidance. During the plantation walk, they let their guests explore the forest area and explain the importance of the existence of the coffee plantation for our neighbourhood. They invite guests to contribute to the community by offering them the possibility to donate and participate in community work.

Q Building

They use natural materials whenever possible and many of the building materials are collected from the property or from the neighbourhood.
